Seann Walsh has been announced as the headline act for this year’s Comedy Night in Freshers week.
YUSU president Kallum Taylor announced that the Brighton born comedian would be appearing this evening. Walsh has appeared on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, 8 out of 10 cats and Mock the Week, among others, and is one of the more high profile acts that has been booked for the YUSU Comedy Night in recent years.
He will be supported by Sara Pascoe, most recognised for her role in Channel Four comedy Campus, and Romesh Ranganathan who has written for Mock the Week.
Surreal comedian Paul Foot was the star attraction last year, but despite being an established name on the touring comedy circuit received mixed reviews from the Freshers who attended.
Third year English Literature student Ursula Wild gave her reaction to the news, “Cool, didn’t know there was going to be a comedy night. Fair play YUSU.”
Willam Hornett, second year philosophy student added “[Walsh] is not even that famous; he’s been on TV a few times and he might make it biggish in a few years, but for the moment he’s more recognisable than famous.”
However, Helena Schofield, a French and Linguistics fresher is positive about the choice of Walsh, ‘I think this is a great choice for Freshers – a young, sharp comic who is all over TV and is really popular right now. I look forward to his quick wit, it will set the standard for a Uni experience full of laughs.”
YUSU President Kallum Taylor enthused, “This looks like it’s going to be a really, really good night. We’ve got here, three quality, nationally recognised acts, at a sound price too. Central Hall will be buzzing!
Tickets for the event can be bought here for £10

York ComedySoc snubbed by YUSU again…sad times.
ComedySoc got the chance a couple of years on the bounce a few years ago and they were, sadly, utterly, utterly dreadful, hence the failure to give them a 1,200 audience at the drop of a hat…
It isn’t the drop of the hat though, it is coming off the back of a very successful year of performance where stand-up was given a big chance to shine. The society has come a very long way in the past few years thanks to some very committed society chairs.
Moreover, maybe students given the chance won’t do well, but surely this is the sort of brilliant opportunity that YUSU should be giving to a couple students, and who knows, they just might surprise you. As someone who has gigged a fair bit in the past year or two, I think you’ll be surprised just how good some of the students are at stand-up. York stand-up really can be some of the most creative stuff going on in the UK. It is coming from people who watch a lot of it and so it is refreshingly cliché free.
Unfortunately, I’m no longer at the uni :( … but if you are, I definitely recommend checking out a ComedySoc show during first term…I think you’ll be impressed.
Of course, I got my ComedySoc hat on at the moment and maybe you’re right that it is too much of a risk. I was just flying the flag, so to speak…one thing is for sure, that is one hell of a lineup for a stand-up show.
