Rumours that York University’s infamous rugby team avoided Ziggy’s nightclub as a goodwill gesture have been confirmed by Club President Rory McGregor.
The news follows confirmation that the culprit behind the “smoke-bombing” of 23 February was, indeed, a member of the team.
According to McGregor, the club elected not to visit the venue until “appropriate action” had been taken against the perpetrator. Although he could not reveal the full details, he did explain that: “The individual that let off the smoke bomb has been punished by the club, YUSU and Ziggy’s.”
He went on to explain to Vision that this individual had been banned from the club, as well as team socials, for a full year.
While the level of compensation demanded by Ziggy’s cannot be confirmed, it has been speculated to be in the region of £4,000.One rugby player exclaimed: “What a joke! Ziggy’s isn’t even worth £4,000!”
However Ziggy’s owner, Richard Fleming, confirmed the club “are not taking any action.”
The team lifted the self-imposed ban ten days after the smoke-bomb incident. As McGregor reassured Vision, “we have returned, a lot of clubmen were there last night and a good time was had by all.”
When questioned on whether he thought the culprit’s actions were a product of overindulgence, or reflected a deeper problem in the culture of the club, he replied that “although this person was out on a rugby social, his actions do not represent the attitude of the rugby club as a whole.”
Ziggy’s apparently consider the matter resolved. This is one in a chain of incidents involving members of the rugby club. Last term the club were banned from Ziggy’s for two weeks, after a night in which witnesses claimed to have seen members smashing glasses, vandalising property and stealing drinks.
