YUSU’s Part Time Officers for 2013-14 were announced at yesterday’s Elections Results Night.
Thomas Ron secured the role of Disabled Students’ Officer ahead of Alix Penn and Maddy Kirkmann. Amassing a total of 1,428 votes, Ron needed just one round to win.
Afterwards, he told Vision: “It’s not me who won, but it’s the disabled students who are going to get a good deal. This isn’t a privilege, it’s a responsibility.”
Matters were less straightforward for International Officer incumbent Mike Anstey, who held onto his position by just 81 votes, defeating Yvoni-Stefania Efstathiou by 1,180 to 1,099.
Kate Elliott and Beth Greenwood were elected RAG Officers for 2013-14 after seeing off the opposing pairings of Beth Campbell and Barbara Grant, and Carrie Hellens & Georgie du Mello Kenyon in a second round of voting.
Meanwhile, Bethan Forrest (with 426 votes), Matthew Taylor and Lee Cook were elected Student Trustees, with Chris Robert and William Hornett missing out.
Cook said: “I was expecting a strong Langwith vote, but I’m still very happy that we won. I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing what I can do.”
The only other contested position was Environment and Ethics Officer, which was claimed by Nick Devlin and Jamie Elliot, as the pair beat Alexandro Rizzo during a second round of voting.
New Volunteering Officers Octavia Elphick-Smith and Sanjna Shah broke down in tears after they claimed their position, and thanked everyone for voting.
All three candidates for Senate Representative, Cadan ap Tomos, Daisy Hale and Harry Toynton, won their positions without any trouble. Harry Toynton said afterwards: “It’s an honour and I’m flattered to have won it”.
The new Women’s Officers are Saskia Papadakis and Josie Field, who defeated RON by nearly 1,300 votes. Madeleine Boden and Conor Roche also saw off the challenge of RON as they were elected LGBTQ Officers.
A “relieved” Leon Morris was elected Campaigns Officer after defeating RON by around 1,000 votes, and says he is “excited” to implement his new policies. Unopposed Union Chair candidate Lloyd Wallis was also elected on the back of over 1,000 votes.
By-elections will be held next term for the positions of Racial Equalities Officer and Mature Students Officer, which received no nominations.
Personally, I think the disabled students have lost. Massive massive shame the girls didn’t win. Thomas ran a hard campaign and I think this article does a disservice to the girls in terms of how close the vote was.
