When you consider the classic Roses sports, then trampolining tends not to be the first sport that springs to mind. It’s the sort of activity that we’ve all had a go at during our childhood years, but never really thought of it as a competitive sport.
Yet at York it undoubtedly is, and when you see York’s finest completing an array of flips, spins and other moves, you quickly realise that there is much more to the sport than first meets the eye.
Over the years trampolining has not been one of York’s traditional strengths, but significant improvement over the past few years culminated in York recording their first ever Roses trampolining in victory in Lancaster last year.
This year the club will be hoping to replicate their success, and club Secretary Rachel Bates told Vision: “We are feeling confident going into Roses this year, but everything can change on the day since the sport is very unpredictable and anything can happen.”
York’s trampoliners have reason to be confident after a highly successful season, which has seen them place in seven competitions over the course of the year. The side has competed in BUCS this year, and also sits eighth in the reputable Northern English University Trampoline League.
“We have a competition the weekend before Roses in Liverpool, which we will be using as a warm-up to Roses,” adds Bates. “We are hoping to defend our win from last year and record our first win at home.”
Newly elected President Catherine Peake will be one to look out for, as the talented trampoliner won her category in BUCS and has produced a series of other strong performances over the course of he year.
The trampolining can be seen on Sunday in the Dance Studio between 11:00 and 15:00, and is worth four points, which would be key in propelling York to an overall Roses victory.
