Review: Animaux by an Amateur

Now, I am no big ‘dance music’ (I am not even sure which genre a lot of the acts were) fan, but I went to Animaux last Tuesday and I bloody loved it. I tried to get someone more qualified to write one, so I apologise for the quality of this review, but the other person who went from Vision was too busy.

It takes place a few times a term in the basement of Mansion, the top floor of which is a strip club and the bottom of which is full of people who are quite off their face. It really is a den of thieves, which is perfect for the sort of music they were playing. It’s not revs so you can really let rip and dance until you borderline injure yourself (or completely ruin your knees in my case).

Now, onto the acts. They are mainly from UoY which is pretty cool, and they gauged the energy of the room pretty well and played ‘sick beats’ which kept us dancing til the end of the night. I asked other attendees of the evening and they all said they greatly enjoyed the music. Sadly I cannot remember much of the tunes, probably because no Britney Spears was played, but I DO remember really enjoying it, and dancing all night like a lunatic (hence the knee injury. It’s worse than when I put my hip out in Willow).

Endeser is the guy on the right. Not sure who the other one is (sorry)

The guy from Dandy and DeLions is now a DJ, which is a far cry from the ska band he used to be in with former Activities officer Daniel Whitmore, he’s in a duo called Roughion, there was also a dude whose stage name is ‘Habitual’ who is from the deep south apparently, and played ‘syncopated, tribal rhythms’. Vacuum Systems created a ‘sonic tapestry’, and finally to headline was Endeser- real name Mantas Zalepūga, who organises the night. He didn’t just play his stomping set though—he was zipping around all night, helping other DJs, mingling and he also designs the entire thing, right down to the posters. He goes hard, not home, so much so that once he played his bass so loud in Mansion that he set the speakers on fire. Don’t worry, I’m sure there won’t be a death risk if you attend the next one.

Anyway, as you can tell I don’t remember too much of the night, except that it was amazing, so as a picture is worth 1,000 words I have attached some to the article. If you go to Animaux, you could have as much fun as these people.

Go, if not only because I am—it is a fantastic way to spend an evening. https://www.facebook.com/events/744543392250223/?fref=ts
