Racquet sports at York

BADMINTON – University of York Badminton Club are one of the largest sports clubs on campus, with nearly 200 members, and one you should definitely consider joining.

If you are good enough, you might be selected to play for one of the eight university teams. These teams play in the BUCS leagues (British Universities and Colleges Sport); the men’s 1sts team, for example, will play in the Northern 2B division against the likes of Durham, Sheffield and local rivals Hull.

At the annual Roses Tournament against Lancaster in May, UYBC won all four of their matches which shows the strength in depth the club possesses.

SQUASH – The squash club is another one of York’s most popular sports clubs. The club compete in both BUCS and college events at the squash courts which are located in the campus sports centre.

College squash is growing, while at university level, the men’s first team finished second in the Northern 2B league. Next year, the women will be competing with eight other teams in one of the most fascinating divisions around.

TENNIS – Tennis is played at the university for two out of the three terms, namely the autumn and summer terms. The six courts are impossibly to miss, located just outside the campus sports centre. UYTC’s training sessions are on Thursdays and Saturdays, and the club also offers coaching opportunities for beginners from 4 ‘til 5 on Thursday afternoons.

A total of five teams currently compete in the BUCS leagues, three men’s and two women’s, so there will be plenty of opportunities to face the very best players around the country, whoever you play for.

TABLE TENNIS – Another one of the most rapidly-growing sports at the university, the table tennis club has proved popular with students at all levels. Training times, held at the main sports hall, are on Monday and Saturday afternoons and the members, led by Chair Alex Taylor, will provide help to anyone starting out.

There are currently two men’s teams competing in BUCS. The first team had a fantastic season last year, winning promotion thanks to a series of excellent performances, and reaching the BUCS Cup final.

In addition, the club is part of the York and District Table Tennis Association and compete against clubs around the city, offering another opportunity to play every weekend.
