The last hurdle preventing the potential opening of a new licensed venue in York has finally been overcome.
The development of a late-night events establishment by SMG in the old Barbican Centre building was temporarily put at risk by concerns put to York City Council over late night noise.
A resident of the local area requested the council consider special measures in order to ensure order would be maintained and that late night noise wouldn’t disrupt day-to-day life for local residents.
However, the £2 million transformation of the building can still be unveiled in May, after the Council approved SMG’s request to open 24 hours and serve drinks until 4 am if necessary.
It is hoped that the new venue will attract more live music acts to York, providing a larger space than the city’s other popular music venues, Fibbers and The Duchess.
SMG have already confirmed a succession of acts to play the Paragon Street venue. The council have also announced that they expect the venue could attract up to 245,000 visitors a year.
The Barbican Centre is located near a large number of student houses in the Fishergate and Heslington Road area, and is likely to attract a number of students to its events, as it is particularly close to campus compared to a number of pubs and clubs in the city centre.
