Two 3D Tvs are to be installed at union bar, The Courtyard, with YUSU hoping they will be available for use by students and staff by the end of Week 1.
Two of the four TVs in The Courtyard will have the 3D facility, while the other two have been upgraded to high definition. The 3D TVs can also be used to broadcast non-3D programming.
Users can buy the stereoscopic glasses necessary to watch 3D content for £1.50 a pair from Courtyard staff or bring their own, and glasses will be distributed for free with certain drinks deals. Originally users were to be charged 50p to rent the glasses, but due to hygiene concerns this scheme has been scrapped.
Sports television is expected to be the main 3D priority. However, only a limited number of sports events will be broadcast in the format. The Courtyard will also show some non-sports 3D programming, such as movies and nature documentaries, which will be advertised in advance.
There are currently only three pubs in York that offer the 3D service: The Terrace, The White Horse and The Ainsty.
“3D sports is a completely new experience to watch sports in and it’s great the Courtyard is staying ahead of the competition. It also offers new social possibilities for groups and colleges on campus,” York Sport President Sam Asfahani commented.
YUSU has said that it expects the 3D service to be successful, but as yet it has no plans to purchase any additional 3D sets.
