Bradford’s draw with the York seconds on Saturday made them optimistic for their BUCs match
against the thirds team. The match seemed to be an evenly matched in the early minutes with both
York and Bradford gaining and losing ground in quick succession.
However, York stepped up its game to give the Bradford keeper some work pulling off some
impressive saves under dangerous pressure. An untidy scrape in the Bradford D allowed Craig
Ferguson from York to finish in style from his score from his second chance in the game.
A dogged Bradford defence didn’t give York the second goal they were craving, ending the half one
nil to the home side.
The second half kicked off with a fast Bradford attack seen off quickly by the York defenders. But
play quickly returned to the Bradford half with York playing a great passing game, TV’s Max Fleming
left the cobbled street of Sloane to make some great runs up the right wing.
York’s Danny Williams added his name to the score card, finding the top left corner with a
magnificent flick after Chris Butterworth’s attempt was deflected by the keeper.
Acknowledgement has to go out to the players from both teams in the mid position. Consistent play
from Butterworth and Sherwood York and Stephen Beckford from Bradford especially meant the
vast majority of attacks came from the wings.
Bradford had a few good breaks but were unable to utilise them into goals. One particular came
from a brave run from captain Rupesh Patil and Sean Benghiat. Their quick passing from one to the
other got them into the York twenty-five. But they were unable to sustain their attack after a miss
hit ball found the waiting York defence.
York increased their lead soon after. Butterworth got his glory moment with a corker of a hit from
the top of the D making the score 3-0. After his modest and demure celebration York were back on
the attack.
A York short corner after am unlucky Bradford foot was fashioned into York’s 5th goal. A controlled
take from Danny Williams found Joe Lancaster whose reverse shot went through the keeper’s legs to
find an expecting Jon Waghorne on the far post.
Within minutes, York scored again, prompting an emotional response from the Bradford goalkeeper.
Good team work from Lancaster and Williams neatly made mincemeat of the Bradford defence to
find Sherwood on the back post. His stylish finish made the score 6-0.
One of many York short corners was finished with Danny Williams’ 4th goal of the match with a
powerful hit from the very top of the D, echoing around the astro as it smashed the backboard.
The Bradford captain was gracious in defeat praising York for their ‘good play’ and commenting,
quite rightly, how Bradford improved in the second half. York captain Jon Waghorne, after
celebrating his own venture onto the score sheet, was jubilant dubbing the match the ‘best 3rds
eleven performance [he had] seen.
Vision’s man of the match goes to Tom Sherwood for consistent play both defensively and on the
attack.
