Coming to University is a unique once in a life time opportunity to reinvent yourself. If you were the guy at college who got less than the desired amount of female attention, now is your really live up to your fashion potential, and here is how:
Before we get into the in’s and out’s
Don’t worry about the G word
I shall level with you, if I had a penny for every time I have been called gay or asked if I was I would be at least £45.98 richer – but seriously do not worry about it. If a girl asks if you are gay then it is probably because they think you are too well dressed to be straight. It is a good thing. If you look straight it is probably because you are wearing shapeless jeans and a gimmicky T-shirt – don’t be that guy.
Being different is cool, but don’t try too hard
So some people at uni dress rather strangely, which is good as there is always someone dressed more weirdly than you. So by all means whack out the crazy trousers and the sweaters your Nan knitted you, but perhaps leave some of the stranger stuff for fancy dress (and you’ll need lots of fancy dress for first year!)
Be yourself
This is so clichéd but seriously don’t try and be something you are not. A few new pieces to catch the girls’ eyes in revs does not equate to that; new clothes can also be good for building confidence. After all you do want to make a good impression! but don’t go spending hundreds in urban outfitters just to be cool at uni.
So here are my three top buys for uni:
Good going out shoes
These are a MUST – you do not want to be going out in trainers (you won’t get into willow for one!). So personally I would suggest smart shoes – ones you would wear with a suit, brogues or some nice boots. The more durable the better trust me converse or vans won’t be able to take going out three times a week for a year.
Vintage sweaters
Now this may sound like mindless ramblings of some hipster wannabe, but seriously I wear my vintage sweaters so much at Uni. The advantage of shopping vintage is you never have the awkward moment of ‘Oh hey we are wearing the same sweater.. Cheers Topman.’ Another reason why they are a must-have is they can often be quite hardwearing and also who doesn’t want to stand out in a crowd? High street sweaters are so same-y these days – get something different.
Something Smart
Kind of ambiguous, but there will always be those occasions at uni when you are expected to interpret ‘smart casual’ so I would recommend chinos and a shirt as they are always a safe bet to fulfil that criteria. You’ll need to look snappy to pull in Revs. As long as you have some nice shirts and presentable jeans though – you can’t go far wrong.
It is not astrophysics (although physicists should take note) if you stick to these tips you should be fine, enjoy freshers!
So basically you want freshers to dress like what you’d see walking around Camden. That sweater is horrible no offence. Way too much going on, it’s too busy… And the shoes, really?
Shoes: Nice chukka boots (clark desert boots)
Jeans: Good quality slim fit denim, it’d be worth investing in some Levi’s
Upperbody, a nice plain solid colour oxford cotton button down should do you perfectly
Funny, cause i’m in your classes and although yes you dress better than the average guy – you colour choices and coordination are far from ideal Michael!
What a heterosexist story!
Not a bad article but I do wish all this gay bashing would stop. If you think being called gay is so bad then you must be a horrible person with no sensitivity.
I think I’ll avoid fashion advice from someone who starts their article with strong implications that the advice will make people think I’ve turned gay
Ok if you want to dress like everybody else and follow the tight jeans big glasses hipster bandwagon
