In a largely one sided affair, Derwent 3rds were outclassed by an impressive Langwith 1sts side.
It was Langwith who were quickest from the blocks, playing free-flowing passing football on the ground in their midfield to almost set up a succession of chances.
Soon, they were 1-0 up, Bruce Starkey sliding a finish into the bottom left corner after being played in by Captain Andy Hutt.
In the next five minutes, Langwith had two opportunities to extend their lead. However, both Hutt and Andy Doyle blazed wide.
After this, Derwent enjoyed a brief period of possession in the opposition’s half. A mistake in the Langwith defence caused the ball to break free to Matt Jenkins, who was lurking around 25 yards from goal. His chipped effort rebounded off the crossbar, only for Josh Park to head the follow-up wide of the mark.
Langwith’s Will Prescott then fired wide from the edge of the box after a ball broke from a corner.
In the second period, after a slow opening ten minutes, Langwith again began to assert their dominance on the game.
A shot from Kieran Hazell forced a save from Derwent ‘keeper Sam Colclough, and a curling effort from Cameron Craig whistled past the post.
Then, Langwith were 2-0 up, Doyle striking a shot beautifully into the top corner from all of thirty yards.
However, Derwent then dictated play for five minutes or so. A shot on the turn from Jacopo Bordignon stung the palms of Langwith ‘keeper Kris Cheshire before Louis Glasser fired a long range effort inches wide of the upright.
Yet, Langwith, after firing a couple more shots off target, really should have made it 3-0 at the death, Luke Gardener striking straight at Colclough after being played in courtesy of a perfectly weighted ball from Morley.
Post match, Langwith Captain Andy Hutt commented that “it was our best performance of the cup so far”, before proceeding to admit he was “disappointed not to progress to the next round (in the Cup proper).”
