The man responsible for the stabbing of a student at the end of last term has been sentenced to six years imprisonment.
The incident was exclusively reported on by Vision earlier this year after Andrew David Lindsell, 22, advanced on the second year in an unprovoked attack on June 25th, whilst under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Lindsell pleaded guilty to charges of wounding with intent and carrying a knife in public, in a trial held at York Crown Court. Speaking to Lindsell, The Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst said: “What you did was deeply shocking for this victim and his friend and a disturbing event for the public. The worrying aspect of this is the speed with which you produced that knife.”
The incident marks Lindsell’s second offence of violence in York, after separate attack in 2008, for which he was jailed for 16 months.
Ashurst also said that the victim was “wholly unarmed and innocent.”
The student was walking home from The Gallery nightclub when he was attacked outside the Shell Garage. It is understood that he was with another friend, who called 999. Lindsell fled the scene and his girlfriend deposited the knife in a nearby stream. He was later arrested in Malton.
The second year was discharged from hospital within 48 hours, with a 5-inch knife wound but no internal organs damaged. When Vision contacted the hospital on June 26th, he was said to be in a stable condition.
At the time of writing, North Yorkshire Police, YUSU and the University were unavailable for comment.
Speaking for Lindsell, Nicholas Barker said that there is “no rational or logical reason as to why this defendant committed this serious act on this night.”
He also claimed that Lindsell had taken mephedrone and drunk alcohol, as well as argued with his girlfriend before the attack, leading to him deciding to go fishing early on the morning of the incident. The knife was not intended to be used on anyone, but was part of Lindsell’s fishing equipment.
Served, get your hands of our students.
What an ugly, waste of space. Good riddance I hope he rots in prison.
