It was confirmed this week that York University’s Futsal Club have been accepted into the Premier BUCS Northern league for the sport.
The club, who have gone from strength to strength in recent years, are only the second club in the university after fencing to take part in a premier BUCS league.
Futsal club President David Ambrozejczyk said: “We’ll have to work hard and put the effort in to compete, but I’m very confident that we can do well in this league. The target is a top three finish to qualify for the Championships in Sheffield at the end of the season.”
The Futsal Club’s success comes despite being forced to deal with a reduced budget, halved to just £500 pounds in the past two years. Current membership is also down on last year’s 34 members, although a confident Ambrozejczyk said: “We don’t have as many members, but we have more quality now than ever before.
“We’ve attracted some great players from university football, which in the past didn’t happen and has now made a great difference. We’re not a small club anymore.”
