James started their season in style on 22 Acres on Sunday, with a convincing 39-0 win over a depleted Alcuin side that was severely hampered by a number of injuries.
Nevertheless, Alcuin were unable to match the physical prowess of their opponents, who played some flowing rugby in the pleasant autumn conditions, and deserved their victory.
However they were outscored by Derwent, who unsurprisingly appear to be the team to beat again once more, as they look to continue their remarkable college rugby record.
On Saturday afternoon Derwent annihilated the combined Goodricke-Langwith team 66-0, and were in dominant and ruthless fashion, as they simply proved too strong for their rivals from Heslington East.
The Goodwith team displayed promise and showed great enthusiasm and commitment, but were ultimately unable to match the physical prowess of their experienced rivals.
Halifax also begun their year with a 20-12 win on Wednesday, as they overcame Vanbrugh in an exciting encounter, to record victory in their opening contest of the season.
Due to the absence of Wentworth and the merger of Langwith and Goodricke in college rugby, there are only six teams competing this term, and last week’s fixtures were the first of the year.
Dominant in recent years, the odds are on Derwent to reign supreme again this year, but they may be challenged by a strong James team.
Really good picture whoever took it
A lot of “physical prowess” going on this week apparently.
Nice to see college rugby being reported in such an impressive depth of detail. Not only did you get the Alcuin/James score wrong (39-0, according to the York College Rugby page), but you didn’t even mention the Halifax/Vanbrugh score at all.
If you’re going to bother writing about college rugby, at least make a vague effort.
@Wiz Collins
First of all I apologise for putting the wrong score, I was initially told 33-0, whilst I was also at the time unaware of the exact score in the Halifax-Vanbrugh match apart from the result. That was an error on my part, and has now been corrected.
I would love to be able to write full reports on every college sport, including rugby, but unfortunately I can only be in one place at a time, and Vision have a severe shortage of sports reporters, so if you would like a better standard of reporting then by all means volunteer to write an article yourself and we will happily publish it.
Granted this piece is clearly not the best, but I’m sure most college sports would be grateful for coverage, and this year we have been trying to highlight a range of sports including basketball and pool as well as the normal ones.
At least on a positive note as College Sport Officer I’m glad to see that people are looking at the College Sport website; that’s a definite plus.
we all know derwent will smash everyone again this year
