York claimed four vital points in their university’s Roses bid with a characteristically fast-paced victory over their Lancastrian rivals, never once falling behind in their 7-4 triumph.
David Ambrozejczwk, excellent in the York goal, pulled off a fantastic early save before both Tom Clarke and Ash Daly went close, but it was Futsal president Dom Hallis who opened the scoring for the white rose.
Lancaster quickly cancelled out this lead however, scoring a well-placed penalty to level things up again, before Daly squeezed a powerful shot inside the post from a tight angle to restore York’s advantage.
The same player then had a penalty saved, but Alex Tringham had significantly more luck with his free-kick, his effort bouncing off the back boards and spinning behind the back of the helpless Lancaster ‘keeper to make it 3-1 at half time.
Two quick-fire Lancaster goals restored parity early in the second half before UYAFC 1sts key man Tom Clarke make it 4-3 and Ambrozejczwk pulled off another top quality stop between the sticks.
Minutes later Matt Mawdesley struck the post for York, only for Hallis to collect the loose ball and round the ‘keeper to make it 5. Mawdesley himself then gave York their sixth, slamming home from a tight angle.
By this point, York were playing with flair and confidence. A momentary lapse saw Lancaster decrease the deficit and make it 6-4, but Tom Clarke rounded off the scoring, finishing well after capitalising on a mistake in the Lancaster defence.
An emphatic 7-4 victory for York then, and a win that the UYAFC 1st XI would be extremely happy to take come Sunday’s outdoor encounter.
