The new all-weather tarmac cycle track on Heslington East is open and available for student use. The track, accompanied by a reception area and bike storage facilities, is made up of a 1.2km loop, a medium length loop and a short loop.
O’Neill Associates, the planning agents for the scheme, said the cycle track will allow cyclists to train “in surroundings not affected by other road users,” while they also suggested the track will suit both new and experienced riders. It is understood York clubs, University societies and individuals will be able to book the facility, with the general public being able to use it when available.
Vision reported last September how the closed road-racing cycle circuit was set for completion after being recommended for approval at the City of York Council’s planning committee.
And plans are also in development with City of York Council for an athletics track to be sited at the University.
The council will fund the athletics track, while the University will provide the land. It has been proposed that the track will consist of eight lanes with long-jump. triple-jump and pole-vault pits, a high-jump area, and javelin throwing circles.
The £9 million Sport Village’s first phase – including an eight-lane 25-metre swimming pool, 120-station fitness suite, dance, spinning and aerobics studios, a full-size 3G astroturf pitch and three five-a-side pitches, sauna, steam room and café – has now been open for almost a full year.
