Futsal 1sts set to face College Allstars

Tomorrow evening the University of York Futsal club will be playing a friendly against a College Cup Allstars Team, as they continue to raise funds for their forthcoming trip to Malaga for this summer’s European Championships.

The match is the club’s latest fundraising venture, and will take place in the tent at 7:45pm tomorrow night. The College Cup Allstars side, skippered by Phil Taylor, will comprise of the likes of Tom Brandreth, Matt Mawdesley and Dalton Harris, whilst YUSU President and Vanbrugh 3rds ‘keeper Kallum Taylor will be in goal.

Looking ahead to the game Taylor said: “The futsal club have had a year to be proud of already, but if we can help make their Malaga dream a reality then that’d be amazing. On the day though, I won’t be so kind between the sticks.”

University of York Futsal ‘keeper Jonny Sim told Vision: “It will be interesting to see how the College Cup Allstars manage on a futsal pitch. They’ve got a lot of talented players but not much futsal experience. Whatever happens it will be a great night; we’ll see who ends up with the bragging rights!”

Club President Dom Hallas, who has been one of the key members of the side this year, added: “We’re all looking forward to what should be a really fun night. There’ll be plenty of skills on show and hopefully a lot of goals, so it will be well worth coming along to watch. It’s also a great way of supporting us as we try and raise the funds required to compete in the European Championships this summer.”

The club have been busy attempting to raise the necessary funds over the past weeks, and have so far raised roughly £3000. The whole trip is expected to cost £7000 in total, and the club are hoping to raise £5000, whilst the players will fund the remainder of the cost themselves.

On the fundraising attempts, Sim said: “So far the university has very kindly provided us with some funding; the Vice-Chancellor has just very generously sponsored us with some new tracksuits; our donations page has brought us a bit of money too. We still have a lot to do though, and are still pursuing sponsorship as well as other fundraising events.”

As well as tomorrow’s contest, the club are also planning to hold an all-day tournament involving local futsal clubs, as well as a training day with their former professional coach Junior Roberti. In addition to that Captain Tom Day is currently filming a documentary entitled ‘Road to Malaga’, charting the incredible journey the side has experienced this year, and a trailer has been released this evening, which can be seen here.

All of these events will help the club in their fundraising attempts, as they continue their preparations for this year’s European Championships, where they will represent the University on the continent.
