A Twitter account has sparked a student search for free cash on university campuses – and their next drop is at York.
Users of the CashOnCampus Twitter account say they will drop an envelope, complete with free cash, at a secret location on campus “very soon” after previously dropping money at Huddersfield, Manchester and Leeds universities.
It is not known who is behind the giveaway, but the craze follows the recent nationwide Twitter search for cash that was sparked by a social media user in America.
An anonymous user, under the Hidden Cash UK Twitter account, stashes cash in envelopes across the country and members of the public then have to find where the envelope is located from a snap of the location given.
The craze came to York earlier this month, and £50 was scooped by a group consisting of York St John students after they found the envelope at Duncombe Place opposite the York Minister.
The new university addition, which only began dropping cash on 30 May, says it “will be hiding cash on a campus near you and will be releasing clues on where to find it.”
It has been endorsed by a leading student marketing agency, Campus Industries, who tweeted: “If you’re a student and want free cash no strings then follow @CashOnCampus.”
Daniel Davis, a neuroscience student at the University of Leeds, was the first winner. He tweeted that he had “found it” together with a snap of him with his prize.
