YUSU Student Activities Officer candidate Harriet Gibson says she was “misunderstood” after she was allegedly heard saying she wanted to cut media funding.
The third-year candidate told an audience that she wanted societies to be treated fairly and did not propose a cut to media funding.
Speaking at the Glasshouse at the Heslington East hustings yesterday, she added that she felt some societies were underfunded, particularly those that are volunteering.
The Language and Literature in Education student became embroiled in a row after she allegedly said she would cut media funding during Monday’s YUSU Election debate.
But she took to Twitter to say that video footage of the event will show she said otherwise.
All three candidates have since said they would not cut campus media funding.
Also speaking at the Glasshouse, candidate Chris Wall said: “Every media society we have is winning awards across the board, and I think we need to support that.”
Mathematics contender Bev Rogers added: “I do not want to cut funding. I will never cut media funding.”
Student media grants are among the largest in the student union societies.
They are used to pay for printing costs, website maintenance and general media upkeep such as new cameras and computing software.
The hustings at the Glasshouse was the second in a week of campaigning as student voters prepare to go to the polls during Week 8 to decide their YUSU team for 2014.
The results will be announced on Friday 28 February.
