The college sports day turned out to be a fantastic occasion for Derwent, as they secured overall victory from the accumulation of events on the college sports day. The battle was close throughout between the three key protagonists in this year’s college sport; Halifax, James and Derwent.

Eventually over the course of the events Halifax fell away, and had to settle for a highly credible third place finish, far ahead of the remaining colleges. The top two however were almost inseparable, and going into the final event, the Tug of War, the competition was still up for grabs.

The group stages set the scene, but the main action was still to come in the semi-finals and beyond. Goodricke had already defeated Halifax to book their place in the final, which left Derwent to meet James in the second clash. This took the meaning of key clash to a new level; Derwent knew that if they beat James then the day would be theirs.

The tension built as a great crowd clustered around the rope, urging on the contestants. Derwent were not to be denied, and after putting in a heroic effort secured a whitewash victory, in the process both securing a place in the final, and more importantly overall victory.

The final then proved to be the icing on the cake, as in a brutal and epic encounter, Derwent ran out victorious. Goodricke took the first leg after a long battle, but Derwent recovered to win the following three and be crowned Tug of War champions, rounding off a perfect day.

The overall results, after all of the day’s contests read as follows:
8th: Wentworth 6pts
7th: Langwith 21pts
6th: Goodricke 22pts
5th: Alcuin 30pts
4th: Vanbrugh 32pts
3rd: Halifax 64pts
2nd: James 80pts
1st: Derwent 88pts

Derwent sports rep, Simon Varley was delighted with the efforts his college had displayed throughout the day, commenting: “I’m incredibly proud of the college, a massive thank you to everyone who turned out”.

It truly was a very successful day, with large crowds of contestants and supporters throughout, creating a superb atmosphere. York Sport President-elect Charlotte Winter told Vision: “It was an amazing day, the best turnout we’ve ever had. I really enjoyed it, and I hope everyone else did too.”
