Both of York’s male squash teams marched into the second round of the BUCS Cup on Wednesday, the firsts and seconds sealing straightforward wins over Sheffield seconds and Bradford seconds respectively.
Calum Fraser’s first team dominated each leg of their tie, coming through 5-0 against their Sheffield opponents. There was an especially pleasing win for third seed Paul Atkinson, the Somerset supremo coming through comfortably after losing the first game. Wins for captain Fraser, Matt Pollen and Tom Lee were topped off by a win for the Barnsley wonderboy Matt Brennan.
The seconds were also playing at home, winning easily against a Bradford side whose merchandise bearing the slogan “We will squash you” proved the most threatening thing about them. Will Wainewright got the ball rolling, only giving up ten points in a swift victory, while Alex Leigh and the maverick Matt Johnson came through in similar style to secure a 3-0 cup win.
The cup victories bode well for the rest of the season, as the second team bid for promotion and the first team look to build on their promotion last year.
