Alongside the college athletics and other events occurring, the day also hosted the college Ultimate Frisbee competition. Derwent’s fantastic day continued here, as they lifted the crown, narrowly defeating Halifax in the final.
In a knockout competition, the first round of matches saw both Derwent and James progress through with byes, after Langwith and Wentworth were unable to field full teams. This still left two important games to play, and these saw commanding victories for both Vanbrugh and Halifax, who put in excellent performances.
Vanbrugh prevailed over Alcuin in dominant fashion, with the eventual scoreline ending 7-0. Halifax’s victory over Goodricke was not quite as emphatic, but they still performed admirably to run out 4-0 victors.
Halifax’s victory set up a semi-final encounter with Vanbrugh, in which ‘fax edged a thrilling encounter, holding off Vanbrugh’s challenge, and effectively employing the skills of their university players, to record a 3-2 victory. Meanwhile Derwent eased their way through to the final with a 4-0 victory over James, in the process demonstrating their credentials as potential winners of the tournament.
Win it they did, and in the final, they surprised Halifax, recording a golden goal victory after the contest had ended 3-3 in normal time. Both teams performed superbly in one of the most exciting events of the day, and in the end Derwent were worthy winners, initiating jubilant celebrations.
