College Profiles: Langwith

This year, Langwith becomes only the second college to take the brave steps to the Heslington East campus. Previously known for being small, compact and being terrible at sports, this all looks set to change with the big move. New Langwith hosts brand new town house buildings, a brand new YUSU bar, and is closer than any other college to the new sports centre on Hes East. Whilst Langwithians are sad to be leaving their old home in the hands of bitter rivals Derwent, exciting times await in the new wood-clad landscape of Heslington East.

The stats: £117 – £123 per week for self-catered rooms, with studio flats priced at the £149 mark. Lets of 39, 41 and 51 weeks.

Langwith Chair – Jack Baker

1. Why did you pick your college?
I’d heard that Langwith was small and had a nice community feeling to it. That, and it had catered accommodation! I didn’t fancy cooking much…

2. What’re its distinguishing features?
Having had the first student union bar, The Courtyard at its heart was a big bonus. We’ll have the third student union (YUSU) bar, The Glasshouse, in our new buildings as of October! This, along with the friendliness of the people in Langwith make it special.

3. What’s the accommodation like?
Brand-spanking-new accommodation. Literally no one will have slept in your bed when you arrive! Most are en-suite and those that aren’t have huge bathrooms you have to share with only 3 other people. Rooms are spacious and well lit.

4. Sum up your college in 3 words.
Fun, relaxed, and exciting.

5. Best thing about the college?
Its brand new facilities. Newest accommodation and the presence of the newest YUSU bar make it fantastic for all students. Not to mention being the college closest to the brand new £9 million sports complex with sauna, jacuzzi, 120-point gym and football pitches.

6. Worst thing about the college?
Lack of common rooms. As there were no provisions for any bar on the Hes East campus, YUSU and Langwith came to a deal that the new bar would be put in place of the common rooms. Luckily, Goodricke have been nice enough to share their common rooms with us.

7. Describe a typical student in your college.
Friendly, considerate and kind on the one hand but outrageous, crazy and party-hard on the other.

8. College member most likely to say:
“Lunch in The Courtyard?”

9. College member least likely to say:
“I heart Derwent”

10. What do you wish you had known as a fresher?
Not to buy books for my course! The library is chock-a-block full of them for the most part. Definitely check after you get to university to see whether you need to buy books or not – it’ll save you a ton of money!

11. What is your biggest freshers memory/regret?
Definitely meeting everyone for the first time in the kitchen where everybody was awkward for about 3 minutes and then someone broke the ice by accidentally farting. Wasn’t me, promise.

12. Why do you love being College Chair?
I’m a tad crazy and just really enjoy being a part of the inner workings of undergraduate life in Langwith. Langwith ‘till I die!

Langwith Student – Jessica Paisley

1. Why did you pick your college?
I chose Langwith because of its very central location and it was near to my department. An added bonus was that Langwith is home to The Courtyard which is a popular SU bar. (This year, Langwith accommodates the brand new bar on Heslington East).

2. What are its distinguishing features?
Langwith is known to be the smallest college but this is all about to change with our big move over to Hes East!

3. What’s the accommodation like?
I haven’t had the opportunity to look around the new accommodation yet but have been told that the bedrooms are much bigger and that the shared town houses are brilliant.

4. Sum up your college in 3 words.
Small but brilliant.

5. Best thing about the college?
Punch! Especially as it is now back on campus! It’s a Wednesday evening social for those not taking part in sports socials filled with drinking games and is a great way to meet new people from all year groups. Keep your wits about you!!

6. Worst thing about your college?
Many people, both from Langwith itself and from other colleges, underestimate Langwith and this prevents some people from taking part in some college-run events. Langwith has great sports teams and holds amazing events, but some are poorly attended which is a shame. Hopefully the move to Hes East, which will bring us closer to the newly built sports village, will end this and we’ll be top of the league!

7. Describe a typical student in your college.
You’ll find them drinking in the SU bar or sleeping off a punch hangover somewhere!

8. College most likely to say.
“Let’s all p*** on Derwent!”

9. College least likely to say.
“We hate Willow!”

10. What do you wish you had known as a fresher?
Having just finished my first year, I could perhaps have stuck with more of the University-wide societies I signed up to at the YUSU Fresher’s Fair. I have had an amazing time and was fortunate enough to hear about and get involved with Langwith’s JCRC and sports teams.

11. Biggest freshers memory/regret?
The whole of the year has been brilliant and I have no regrets! I’ve had so much fun and am already looking forward to next year’s Fresher’s Week, particularly now that Langwith will be larger and can host events in the brand new buildings on the Hes East campus. I am eagerly anticipating being a STYC and meeting all the new Langwithians.
