Alcuin took on Derwent in their first game of the new term and put on a brilliant performance which would surely have sent shivers down their opponent’s spines.
Alcuin dominated right from the beginning and could have scored in the first couple of minutes had it not been for Derwent captain Allison Wise’s clearance of the goal line.
Alcuin then missed another great chance when Tom Sherwood managed to shoot wide from almost point blank range. That was however the only blemish on his part as he scored soon afterwards, following up on a rebound after Derwent gave away the ball cheaply in their own half.
The first goal opened the floodgates Alcuin then finished a great attacking move to go two up courtesy of Sherwood again, before Jamie Randall made it 3-0 only moments later from a short corner.
There were a few more great clearances by Allison Wise on the goal line but it was only a matter of time before Alcuin struck again, this time through Co-captain Steph Ashwood. Derwent were then guilty of giving away two cheap goals as Sherwood capitalized on the first occasion and Ashwood on the second to make it 6-0 at half time.
Derwent made a change at half time with Matte Retzius coming on for Rosie McCluskey. The second half started where the first ended with Alcuin scoring their seventh goal just a couple of minutes in.
Derwent then scored through Jack Bradshaw who showed some good skill to beat two defenders before slotting in. Derwent continued to push on and left huge gaps at the back, which allowed Alcuin to add some more goals to their tally, with Sherwood scoring three more and Ashwood helping herself to another.
Alcuin could have added some more goals but for some off-the-line clearances and wasted chances, not that it really mattered. The game finally ended with Alcuin winning 11-1.
Derwent captain Allison Wise said, “It was a good effort but the team was missing regulars. Pleased with the effort of new players and hoping to improve.”Alcuin co-captains Steph Ashwood and Jamie Randall said, “Good game and we made good use of the space.”
