On a bitterly cold day Derwent firsts taught Langwith a lesson in how to play football. A crushing 7-0 defeat left the Langwith players wishing they were still tucked up in bed. Langwith simply could not cope with the attacking prowess that Derwent provided. Once Derwent had got their first there was no coming back and, in truth, it could have been a cricket score.

After an uneventful first 15 minutes, Derwent sparked into life. The first goal came from a long ball over the top. Derwent’s Sabas outmuscled his marker down the right flank and slipped a ball into David Kirk who slotted home a simple finish.

After the first, the floodgates opened. Some neat passing led to Joe ‘The Worm’ Eyles finding acres of space down the right wing. The winger floated in a deep cross which Sabas nodded back for Captain Kirk to again tap home. All too easy for Derwent. Two minutes later sloppy defending led to the third and last goal before half time. Whitall’s delightful inswinging corner was poorly dealt with and ricocheted into the net from a Langwith boot.

The saving grace for Langwith was their ‘keeper. After 40 minutes Kirk won Derwent a penalty when his cross struck an outstretched Langwith arm. An easy decision for the referee to make. Kirk stepped up for his hat trick but was denied by a marvellous save from Chris Cheshire; the last piece of action before the half time whistle.

One may have hoped that with the glorious penalty save before half time it may encourage the Langwith players. But this hope did not come into fruition. Langwith were hopeless in the second half.

More fantastic team play produced a fourth for Derwent. Jack Fisher popped a ball into the gargantuan Sven Sabas who, with a touch that King Midas would have been proud of, chested the ball into the path of Whittall. The Derwent midfield maestro marauded into the area and slotted past the goalkeeper’s near post.

Langwith had a glimmer of hope after the fourth. A nice passing move left Woodall in open space but his shot was struck straight at the keeper. Derwent’s fifth came from another goalmouth scramble after a low right wing cross from Whittall, which Sabas managed to tuck home. An almost identical goal, yet from the other wing saw Overo-Tarimo add his name to the score sheet.

On the 85th minute mark a moment of madness came over the Derwent ‘keeper who charged out and took down the oncoming Langwith striker. The ref went to his pocket but only produced a yellow card.

The final nail on the coffin was provided by Ollie Harrison. Some good work down the right strained the Langwith back four. The ball was eventually passed out to Harrison who produced a sumptuous strike from 20 yards out; one to tell the grandkids about for certain.

Langwith’s captain declared that his team “Had a better performance than last week. We were individually improved but as a team we weren’t clicking.” Meanwhile, Derwent’s captain Kirk stated that “Langwith were pony,” and went on to praise his “five or six players who came up from the seconds.” Overall a forgettable day for Langwith.
