Alcuin secured three points today with a 3-1 win over a Wentworth team, regarded as stronger than
the previous last two seasons. Although Alcuin dominated the first half, Wentworth put up a good
fight in the second half, with a multitude of chances.
Only ten minutes into the game, Alcuin looked threatening as a superb strike from Leonidis
Caponi rebounded off the cross bar. However, Alcuin did not dominate until the latter period of
the first half, as the game looked fairly even matched, with no team exerting control. Dan Horsfall
did well to keep Alcuin goalless, until he was finally beaten by Leonidis Caponi. Caponi rounded the
keeper, and despite a desperate effort by Wentworth’s defence to keep the ball out, Alcuin went 1-0
up.
Shortly after the goal, Alcuin went on the attack again. After a period of pressure in the Wentworth box, Will Taylor slotted it home into the left hand corner to make it 2-0 to Alcuin. Although Alcuin looked strong in attack, a mistake by the defence led to a promising run by Wayne Paes which was unfortunate not to yield a goal.
Despite going into the second half 2-0 down, Wentworth did not give up. Wentworth’s wingers
brought them back into the game, with numerous runs by Samik Datta making Alcuin’s defence look
vulnerable and Sam Taylor was unlucky not to get one back for his side only ten minutes into the
second half. Furthermore, after good approach play by Wentworth, Duncan B’s impressive header
was denied by Damian Pickard. However, a counter attack by Alcuin led to Caponis’s second goal of
the game, making it 3-0 to Alcuin.
Wentworth’s endeavour was rewarded by a conciliation goal by Wayne Paes, making it 3-1, yet
it was too late in the game to turn it around despite Wentworth’s efforts. Wentworth must be
acknowledged for their unrelenting attack in the second half, but as put by their skipper Wayne
Paes, this was a ‘richly deserved win’ for Alcuin.
