Halifax 3rds have been in impressive form so far in college cup, and picked up another point today that sees them maintain their decent place in the group.
Both teams had chances to win the match, but nullified each other for the most part.
An end-to-end first half saw Samik Datta almost get on the end of Luke Fleet’s cross, and then Jake Mundy work the Wentworth goalkeeper.
Wentworth had the aerial prowess of Carl Hodgson to thank for several decent interceptions, as well as providing their most serious attacking threat.
Fraser Moyle found the net just before half-time, but it was the wrong one; his audacious off-balance shot was sliced wildly wide and found the five-a-side net by the pitch side. Sean Cole had a sniff of a chance to put Halifax ahead from Jordan Goodfellow’s throw, but nothing came of it.
Alarm bells rang for Halifax Josh Fisher when Carl Hodgson smashed a low free-kick towards goal – the name ‘Carlos’ on the back of his shirt seemed apt – but the strike was deflected wide.
There was still time for a bit of late drama: Hamish Denham failed to score a one-on-one for Halifax after being played through by Mundy. Then, seconds before the final whistle the Wentworth bench were incensed by Tom Ullyott’s tough aerial challenge on Bruce Rawlings in the penalty area, but no penalty was given.
All things considered, Halifax 3rds should be happy with a draw that keeps them above Wentworth 1sts in their group.
