12 matches have been played, 42 goals scored and entertainment has been a plenty. That is the beauty of the College Cup, a competition which has already grasped campus and lured vast crowds into lining the JLD over the past days.

In a week of no major surprises, there have been a series of dominant performances by the heavyweights of college football, with both James and Derwent 1sts hitting five, and Vanbrugh and Halifax 1sts cruising to opening wins. Meanwhile others have impressed such as Wentworth 2nds and especially James 2nds, who annihilated Langwith 3rds yesterday afternoon in a 9-0 thumping. Here Vision takes a look at the action in each group:

Group 1

After all the goals of the past two days, Monday’s games may well seem a distant memory. Group 1 is by far the weakest of the four, and the clear favourites Halifax 1sts opened up their campaign with a comfortable victory. The main battle appears to be for second place in the group, and in the week’s key fixture Alcuin 2nds secured a valuable draw against Langwith 1sts, continuing Langwith’s winless run. In the final game last year’s plate winners Wentworth 2nds edged to a vital win over Derwent 3rds, to start their campaign off in fine fashion.

Group 2

After their historic league success in the spring term, Wentworth 1sts were brought crashing back down to earth on Tuesday, as they were thumped 5-1 by an impressive James 1sts team, in arguably the most high profile fixture of the week. Tom Clarke continued his incredible College Cup record with a brilliant hattrick, which will surely dent the morale and confidence of the postgraduates. Vanbrugh 2nds also recorded a convincing 3-0 victory, made even sweeter by the virtue that Derwent 2nds were held to a 1-1 draw by Alcuin 3rds.

Group 3

Three teams look likely to battle it out for the top two places in Group 3, and all three were victorious in the opening round of fixtures. Chris Osborne bagged a brace for Goodricke 1sts as they eased past Langwith 2nds, and they were joined at the top of the table by Alcuin 1sts who also recorded a 3-0 victory over Vanbrugh 3rds, with Andy Fernando particularly impressing. Halifax 2nds though will provide a stiff test for both sides in forthcoming weeks, and sit third on goal difference after opening their campaign with a 2-0 win over Wentworth 3rds.

Group 4

It was goals galore in Group 4, as James 2nds led the way with a 9-0 demolition of a sorry Langwith 3rds outfit, to send a warning to the highly fancied Derwent and Vanbrugh 1sts in what has been labelled the Group of Death. Boosted by the return of a number of their key university players, Derwent 1sts were also in fine form, cruising to an impressive 5-0 victory over Halifax 3rds, whilst defending champions Vanbrugh 1sts began their 2013 campaign by defeating Goodricke 2nds 2-0.

Good Week: James College. Both their 1sts and 2nds were in brilliant form, recording significant victories.

Bad Week: Wentworth 1sts suffered a heavy defeat, whilst Langwith’s misery continued with the 1sts failing to win again and the 3rds being utterly dismantled.

Player of the Week: Tom Clarke once more rose to the occasion of the College Cup with an excellent hattrick to propel his side to victory.

  1. I think a mention should have been made to Alcuin, as not only were they the only college in the competition to remain unbeaten. Both the third and second teams were the only teams to get results against higher rated teams.

  2. Indeed I agree with you Mr Alcuin, and believe that you definitely have a point. After the terrible form of the Alcuin sides last year they have started excellently this time around, and hopefully it will continue. However being from Alcuin myself I have the tendency to try not to pour too much praise on my own college, reverse logic you could say.

  3. Yeah, well done to Alcuin. Top performances from all three teams. Wouldnt have expected it after the 2s and 3s propped up their groups last year. If only Langwith could come up with those kind of results.

  4. Yeah holla to Alcuin, they did well. They’ll still crash out in the later stages, can’t finish. Just like in the cup final last year.

  5. These last two posts are clearly not by anyone from Langwith College. We know we’re not the strongest team but don’t see why people keep trying to drag us down with these posts.I don’t understand what you lot get out of posting using these names but I guess if its what makes you happy then don’t let anyone stop you.
