Langwith 2nds 5- 1 Goodricke 3rds
Goodricke 3rds ended their disappointing college cup campaign with a demoralising defeat as Langwith slotted home five goals on the road to a comfortable victory to round off the group B fixtures. Neither side will be troubling the later stages of the tournament but both teams were still keen to make an impression and Goodricke had hoped to build on their improved performance in their narrow 1-0 defeat to James 2nds.
In the first half it did indeed appear that a close encounter was in store. Though Langwith went ahead early on, taking advantage of Goodricke’s inability to defend long throws, Goodricke soon equalised with their first and only goal of the cup. Josh Savage floated in a free kick from long range which deceived everybody in the area and somehow found its way into the Langwith net. Langwith responded by upping their game and managed to sneak ahead again before half time. A ball was drilled into the area and was deflected into his own net by immensely unfortunate centre back Harry Shaw.
If the first half was close the second half was altogether different affair entirely as Goodricke started well passed the ball around with confidence. It was only with Langwith’s 3rd goal that the rout began. The referee saw a push on a Langwith player in the Goodricke area and awarded a penalty. Matt Wilcox stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner giving Jon Cook in the Goodricke goal no chance. Two more goals from close range provided the icing on the cake, though Goodricke did have their moments and Dave Driver was unlucky not to double his team’s tally when he drew a good save from Langwith keeper Simon Wood
The real highlight of the match was an outrageous piece of trickery from Tom Saint to flick the ball up over his head leaving his opponent baffled and the spectators dazzled. Goodricke must have been wishing that goals were awarded for such artistic flair, then this match may have been a little less one-sided.
Matt Wilcox scored the penalty.
No mention of hat-trick hero Mike Grimes in the report either?
