It was an easy victory for Goodricke, who took the lead and maintained it from just two minutes in. Josh Savage got the opening goal after he powered the ball with a header into the bottom right corner after being left unmarked.
Will Cooper’s effort 15 minutes in was the closet Vanbrugh came to scoring, after he made a storming run down the left wing. The shot, which came from just outside the area was punched away as Goodricke’s keeper Noel Rogers dived to his right to protect his goal.
Goodricke pushed for a second with a series of corners taken by Luke Hurst and it didn’t take long before they were rewarded and doubled their advantage. After a scramble on the line, which Goodricke’s Jamie Harbour tried to take credit as he “was nearer” (but it was more likely to be the goalie who got the final touch), Goodricke went 2-0 up.
The goals kept coming in the first half; Mike Abdul’s cross-goal shot that went straight into the back of the net which was shortly followed by a goal from Matt Burke.
Play lost momentum in the second half and it was 15 minutes before another goal was scored. It was Burke who got his second of the match, bringing the score up to 5-0 to Goodricke. Soon after he achieved a hat-trick.
Goodricke Captain Harry Shawe commented that “everyone played brilliantly, especially Will Ward the hat-trick hero, who had a quality game. Everyone was on top form, and it was nice that 3rds team has a clear sheet for the first time in the College Cup.”
James Bugg, the Vanbrugh captian said that he was “extremely disappointed with the result and performance. We didn’t play very well at all. We need to work on defending.”
