A TIRED and depleted James team were unlucky to lose to Goodricke in their college badminton round. Despite putting up a very enthusiastic fight, they eventually succumbed 5-4.
David Loring and Bella Grant started in style what was to be a straight winning streak for this dynamic duo. They dealt with the Goodricke pair of captain Josh Hay and Sophie Taylor, despite very energetic, and at some points, inspired play from the Goodricke two. For instance, one dramatic smash from Hay powered past the racquets of Loring and Grant. The game culminated 21-17 with Goodricke unlucky to lose in what was a very closely fought match.
While on court 2 the other James pairing off Chris Butterworth and Nia Powell faced an epic battle against Goodricke’s Scott Edwards and Heather Robertson. Determined play from both teams drew the game out into a 24-22 victory to Goodricke. Butterworth played on particular shot from the floor after making a great shot at full stretch.
Both Bella and David and Chris and Nia were straight back on the court to play their second matches. Tiredness didn’t seem to show in Bella and David, seeing off the Goodricke pair Daphne Allamenou and Raymond Wong 21-12. Chris and Nia, however, had a battle on their hands, being pushed by Goodricke’s Josh and Sophie almost point for point. Nia in particular showed some very persistent play, fighting some points entirely by herself. They eventually overcame their opponents 21-19.
Tiredness perhaps began to show in the James’ pairing of Chris and Nia in their final game of the day. They faced a tough opposition in Raymond and Daphne who worked incredibly well as a team, their communication on court was very strong with both teammates supporting each other to the end. They dominated on court, making the final score 21-13.
The last match of the day was fought between Goodricke’s Scott and Heather and James’s Dave and Bella. Dave and Bella claimed their third victory of the day- the final score being 21-14 after being taken to 10 all, the James pairing fought back and pulled ahead.
Unfortunately, despite strong play from James, they failed to field a third team due to one player being at work. Goodricke therefore claimed victory in all three of the cancelled games, thus making the final tally 5-4 to Goodricke.
Sally, it’s David Loving. Good to see you’re writing up college badminton though! You still playing for Halifax?
Hi David. I am not playing for Halifax, I played once when they were short! Cheers by the way
