A power cut on campus has caused widespread disruption to University of York students.
At around 2:30 this afternoon, areas of Derwent, Langwith, James, Vanbrugh and Heslington Hall all lost power. York’s webmail service, the VLE and the YUSU website have all been made unavailable by the cut, affecting students off-campus as well as those in the areas hit by the power cut. Students in the library have been without an internet connection for an extended period. Seminars and lectures were also affected, with many being cancelled due to the power outage.
The University IT services have confirmed that the cause of the cut was a “digger [going] through a power cable” and that “it may take up to 2 hours to restore power and the network.” York IT Services have now confirmed that “the network will be down until at least 5pm.”
Second year Law student Tom Banks told Vision, “I’ve got a deadline to meet and the VLE is down, hence I can’t access any of the information I need. It’s far from ideal.”
The university have now confirmed that power has been restored as of 5pm. Access to webmail and the york.ac.uk website were restored at around 6pm.
Hi! Can’t believe this is the only place on the web reporting on the power outage!
It’s horrible. Came home to continue my work and found I can’t use the VPN and the university website is down.
Is it really possible that an entire campus depends on _a_ cable??
Is…is “Campus Broken” a pun? If it is I really don’t get it. And if it isn’t, are you sure this is Vision and not a reputable news source?
That said, having the power go out in the middle of a seminar was a bit of a shock…
Has anyone wondered if the guy with the digger is alright? Going through a mains cable and all that…
missed the whole thing because i was at home! i’m actually gutted at this. how often do we get excitement like this?
