The candidates for the upcoming YUSU by-elections have been announced. There is just one candidate each for both available positions. For Mature Students Officer, Minal Supri is standing, having already held the position for this year. For Racial Equality Officer, Isabelle Scott and Sairish Tahir are running as a pair.
Nominations reopened earlier this term following a lack of candidates coming forward in the previous elections that saw Kallum Taylor re-elected as YUSU president.
On standing for the role, Tahir told Vision: “We would primarily put emphasis on improving race relations across campus, encouraging an active participation of the celebration of cultures and backgrounds our student community embodies”. He was also added: “We envision transforming out ideas into reality though the promotion of an open forum through events, talks, lectures and debates.”
Outgoing Racial Equality Officer Asiya Elgady also said: “I am really looking forward to seeing who stands for this position, especially given the recent attention which it received… I am also pretty keen to see how those standing will address their areas of concern.”
Official campaigning for the candidates does not begin until this Monday (13th May). Voting in the by-elections runs between 16th May and the 21st May. Both Part-Time roles see the successful candidates heading their respective campaign networks in YUSU.
