Extravagant plans to build 11 blocks of student flats on Hull Road have finally been approved by the City of York Council Planners. This result comes after a year long battle between developers Uniliving ltd. and local residents.
The news will come as a nasty shock to local York residents. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told York Vision “This is an absolute disgrace, those flats will be full of drunken students who will make a ridiculous amount of noise and litter the streets with their half eaten pizzas.” When questioned about the students that currently live next to him he said that “I don’t think the students that live next to me are the best of neighbours.”
“I don’t hate them, it’s just that they’re here for different reasons to the rest of us.”
Chair of Osbaldwick Parish Council, Mark Waters has also been opposed to the development, having campaigned against it since the plans were first announced. He believes that the University should provide such accommodation on campus.
Councillor Anne Reir disagrees, stating that “Even if we insisted that the university provided places for every single one of its students we couldn’t make them live there”
The 54 high-spec apartments will house a whopping 282 students it what is currently a disused plot of land. The new buildings will vary in height from two to four stories and there will be fewer than ten parking spaces.
One second year maths student commented, “This is brilliant, I’ve just moved into a run-down, rat-infested house in Tang Hall and I yearn for something a bit more comfortable.” He further commented, “I bet the social scene would be wicked.”
Council bosses have however rejected similar plans for a further six blocks of student accommodation on Lawrence Street citing that the development would have a negative impact on the area.
