In horrendous conditions on a windswept 22 Acres, York breezed to a resounding 32-0 victory over a lacklustre Sheffield Hallam side in a one-sided encounter.
From the very first whistle York were by far the stronger team, putting in a dominant performance to dismiss their Yorkshire rivals. York started the day in second place in Northern 2B, with four wins out of five, but behind Northumbria who had defeated them earlier in the season.
Sheffield Hallam 1sts, meanwhile, have had a stagnated season to date, only playing three games prior to the contest. Twice they had emerged victorious, but today they were brushed aside by York who were by far the superior side.
York raced in to an early lead in the windy conditions with Izzy Mattick and Alexis amongst the early goalscorers. Hallam were struggling to force their way into the encounter, and York quicky extended their lead to 7-0 before the visitors called for a timeout, as an attempt to halt the White Roses’ momentum.
The temporary break failed to halt York’s charge, as they continued to dominate, whilst the visitors rarely troubled York’s defence. Sasha Greane was York’s most prolific goalscorer, as she frequently exploited weaknesses in the Hallam defence, to slot home goal after goal.
The duo of Mattick and Greane further extended York’s lead, and by half-time the contest was essentially over, as York had stormed into a 15-0 lead.
The second half continues in a similar pattern, with Greane quickly adding another five goals to further add to Hallam’s woes. Tessa Russel and Alex Whitehand then continued the momentum, whilst York’s defenders remained spectators for much of the match.
The visitors called for another timeout with eight minutes remaining, and enjoyed a slightly better period of play, for the first time enjoying a positive spell of possession. However they were unable to prevent York keeping a clean sheet, and Greane added two more goals to make the final scoreline 32-0.
After the game York Captain Alex Whitehand told Vision: “We’re really pleased to keep a clean sheet and the defence shored up. Our aim is to attain promotion and we’re hoping that Northumbria slip up against Durham.”
