In the hotly anticipated encounter between York and UCLAN in the semi-final of the BUCS Northern Conference Cup, it unfortunately ended in a disappointing defeat for the York girls. Despite what seemed to be total domination of possession by York, it was UCLAN who took the lead just before half time and the match ended 1-0.
The game started with very back and forth play between the sides, but it was York who were creating the chances with fantastic balls being fed by Marte Wang into Bea Rye, whose shot was cleared off the line early on in the first half. With several other missed chances during the half it seemed like only a matter of time before York would score.
York still had the majority of the ball, however UCLAN were starting to create chances of their own. Just on the stroke of half time the visitors broke through York’s defence, goalkeeper Meg Phillips came out and missed. With the defensive mistake UCLAN capitalised and scored.
After a rousing team talk, York went into the second half with their heads held high. The game restarted much like the start of the first half. With Marte Wang sending fantastic passes forward, York were applying the pressure in the hope of equalizing but they struggled to get anywhere near the goal.
With the first major chance of the second half, lovely play through to Sam Barker whose shot was unfortunately saved by the UCLAN keeper. With Meg Phillips shouting supporting a great corner was controlled brilliantly by Marte Wang and sent towards the bottom left hand corner but was saved by the keeper yet again.
UCLAN hardly saw the ball in the second half but York were now panicking as they entered the last five minutes which lead to bad passing on their part. Still they keep the ball away from UCLAN. With York failing to score for the whole of the second half despite the constant pressure, the game ended 0-1 to UCLAN.
After the game captain Vicky DeCamp commented that she was ‘disappointed with the result but the girls have done well to get this far and they were just unlucky.’
