IMPRESSIVELEY, SEVEN of York’s University teams have got through to the quarter finals of the BUCS cup.
Most notably, both of York Men’s 1sts and 2nds Table Tennis sides progressed to the next stage of the cup, with hope that they may meet each other in the final. This could be an immense showdown, with York 2nds being the underdog to a York 1sts side which are comfortably sitting at the top of their league. York 1sts are to meet Manchester 2nds and York 2nds are to meet Teeside 1sts in the next round. Victory is attainable for both sides and there is hope that at least one York side reaches the final, bringing the cup back with them.
Similarly, Basketball has both the Women’s and Men’s 1sts sides through to the quarter finals. Simultaneously, they put on an impressive performance, with the men knocking out Sunderland with a century of points, and the women knocking out Teeside. Both sides come up against Northumbria 2nds in the next stage, with the women’s side looking most likely to progress to the next round. However, with their impressive victory over Sunderland, the men’s side, although bottom of their league, have a lot of potential.
Both the Men’s Football 1sts and the Women’s Hockey 1sts battled against tough opposition to get into the quarter finals. The Men’s Football went into extra time against Hull firsts, who battled intensely throughout the whole game. However, it was a Tom Brandreth header which secured York’s place in the next round. The Women’s Hockey 1sts battle against Durham 3rds went into penalty flicks, in which the Captain, Hannah Gage, led her team to victory.
York Men’s Football 1sts have a chance to redeem their bleak season with a tie against Leeds Met 3rds and York Women’s Hockey 1sts come up against Sheffield Hallam 2nds. Hopefully, these two ties will be just as exciting.
Lastly, York Women’s Badminton 1sts beet Leeds Met 3rds 5-3, which was a fairly matched game from start to finish. They meet their neighbours, York St John, in the next round.
York look in good stead for a BUCS Cup victory for at least one of its sides, but the efforts of the teams which went out in this round must not go unnoticed.
The Netball 1sts battled into extra time to lose by only four goals to a Northumbria team that sits at the top of their league.
Also, the Women’s Lacrosse 2nds battled intensely against a Leeds Mets 1sts side, which look like likely contenders for the cup.
Furthermore, Women’s 1sts Volleyball, Women 1sts Squash and Men’s Fencing 2nds all went out of the cup with their heads held high.
Vision will keep you all up to date with the next round, and it looks to be a thriller.
