YUSU President Kallum Taylor announced a boost for lockers and lighting today following concerns from students.
University bosses have pledged £10,000 to install around 450 lockers throughout the main Heslington West campus from early next year.
They will be flexible, moved with ease and involve a £1 deposit.
The lockers will also come in different sizes – fitting books to sport bags.
But it is not known how long students will be able to use the lockers for after a time limit of 1 day was imposed by library officials during the last locker increase in July following the discovery of rotten food.
Speaking via the YUSU Blog, Taylor said: “This should help ya’ll living off campus who don’t particularly enjoy having to walk around with a heavy bag of books, sports gear, musical equipment or anything that might be slightly burdensome or awkward.”
Meanwhile, Halifax College residents were also celebrating after being told a number of lights around the accommodation would be fixed and new ones installed.
Lights in Wood Court, Lindley Court, Ingram Court and Younger Court will be fixed, alongside St Lawrence Court, the opposite allotments and the Irwin Court bike shed.
New lights will be given to the back of the Costcutter store, the recycle area, the computer suite and to House M in St Lawrence Court.
Outgoing college President Marian Lally said she was pleased the issues of lighting were finally being addressed.
“It’s been an ongoing problem with a few of the pathways around Halifax,” she said.
“It’s good to see it’s finally been address by the university to improve students’ feeling of safety on campus and in college.” [sic]
The action was prompted following concerns from Halifax students at the impact on safety from low levels of lighting around the accommodation.
