Behind Bars: Nagshead

Nagshead – 100 Micklegate

If you’re looking for a student-filled bar selling cheap drinks that is close to the clubs, look no further than Nags. Part of York’s infamous ‘Micklegate run’ – the stretch of bars and pubs that runs the whole way down a street you will no doubt have become extremely familiar with by the end of your freshers week, Nagshead is just a short walk down the road from Mansion, the home to Ziggy’s Wednesdays club nights, and its back exit leads out almost directly into the queue for Tokyo, York’s Thursday night destination.

However, you will most likely find Nags busy on any night out, and that is down to its excellent drinks deals. Known for its ‘Trebles for Singles’ slogan, you can pick up a treble spirit and mixer for little over £3. You can go for the traditional coke or lemonade, which means your drink will come in a small glass and taste much like flavoured (but very lethal) paint stripper, or, if your aim is to not spend your night on the toilet floor, take advantage of their wide array of other mixers. Lilt, Vimto, Irn Bru and various flavours of Fanta are all popular choices, and you get an entire can to mask the taste of vodka/rum/gin.

If you fancy something a bit weaker than a treble fear not, as Nags also do a ‘4 for £5’ deal on bottles such as Fosters and VKs, whilst also selling many shots for just £1.

If you find it getting a bit cramped inside as the sports clubs pour in in fancy dress for their Wednesday night Ziggy’s fix then there is a decent outside space which is both heated and covered to shield you from the northern weather. There is also substantially more seating outside which makes it much better for big groups like flat outings and socials.

It doubtless won’t be long until you find youself in Nags for the first time, and after that there’s a good chance you’ll be visiting regularly during your time at York – the definition of a student favourite.
