Beauty School

As the leaves begin to fall and the jumpers begin to come out from their temporary summer homes, it’s clear that autumn is upon us. Whilst this of course means the promise of bonfires, hot chocolate and turning on the heating, it also means we’re entering a whole new fashion season and with it a whole array of new beauty trends. From spiky nails to silver eyes, there’s a lot going on for autumn/winter 2011 so we at Vision have provided a helping hand and put together our top 5 beauty trends for the coming season.

1. The future’s orange

While nail colours might be taking a more subdued route this season, for eyes and lips orange has been inescapable on the catwalk. Admittedly tangerine eyeshadow is a difficult look to pull off in any kind of real life setting; however a slick of coral lipstick is an easy and flattering way to get your colour fix.

The brows have it

After years of torture at the hands of tweezers, wax and threading alike, this season eyebrows are big, thick and not to be ignored! Sadly this doesn’t mean you can say farewell to your tweezers just yet, as to really make this look really work, definition is key – think bold not bushy. After eliminating those pesky stray hairs, softly fill in the brow, starting from the inner corner and working outwards with an eyebrow pencil or, for a softer look, brow powder. Complete the look with a slick of clear mascara over the top to keep your perfect brows in place.

3. On the lash

This autumn big lashes are big news so unless you’re one of the few lucky enough to have been blessed with naturally luscious lashes, you’ll need a great volume-boosting mascara to get those classic Twiggy-style sixties eyes. Dusting a little powder over your eyelashes before applying mascara will help it to stick. If all this sounds like too much effort then of course you can always fake it. Just remember, the bigger the better.

4. Heavy metal

This season’s update of the classic smoky eyed look is switching traditional blacks and greys for dark silvers and deep bronzes. Metallic shadows and liners will make a real statement for evening eyes or for a more subtle way to work the metallic trend, sweep a dusting of gold shadow across your upper and lower lids.

5. Neutral Territory

Gone are the pastel pinks and neon oranges of summer and in are ladylike neutrals and sophisticated deeper shades. This season’s number one nail colour is a mixture of brown, grey and beige with a hint of purple, and is a much prettier colour than its name – greige- would suggest. Shape wise, this autumn it’s all about long, sleek nails and, if you’re feeling particularly brave, filed to a sharp talon-like point.
