It has been announced that both Basshunter and Sub Focus are set to play at this year’s Big D. The acts were announced earlier this evening at the Big D launch party in Parish. Lethal Bizzle, Crystal Fighters and Itchy feet will also be performing this year, with the capacity increased by 300 to over 1,800 people. Tickets will go on sale at 12pm this Wednesday for £25.
Talking about the theme will translate on the night, Derwent Vice-Chairs Ben Woolley and Greg Brocklehurst told Vision: “we are going to take you on a magical trip spanning several continents across the globe as you ‘Come Fly with D’. From the colourful Thai Full Moon Party to a sexy Russian-themed vodka bar, Big D 2011 is going to transform the University of York campus into something truly special, with a suitably impressive line-up.”
The campus event, which will span across Langwith and Derwent Colleges, is organised by the Derwent Vice-Chairs along with the Big D committee. It is regarded as one of the biggest and most popular events of the year. Last year the YUSU website crashed within a minute of the tickets going on sale, only functioning again properly several hours later. In 2009 tickets were sold from the Derwent Porters lodge resulting in lengthy queues, but still selling out in only 45 minutes. This year organisers will be selling from both the YUSU online shop and the porters lodge, with the servers being expanded three-fold to cope with the demand.
Swedish Techno DJ Basshunter, is best known for the singles “Now You’re Gone” and “All I Ever Wanted”, which came in at No 1 and No 2 respectively in the UK singles chart back in 2008. He has since had limited success in the UK, Vision’s Music Editor Ed Francis commented: “Basshunter would be a perfect headliner if this were a school disco, as a grown adult I’ll be giving it a miss.”
Drum and Bass DJ Sub Focus will be playing a DJ set at the same time as Basshunter, with all performances happening in L/N/028 or D Bar. All the profits from Big D go to charity.
This year’s beneficiaries are: Goedgedacht, Leeds Children’s Charity, Ghurka Welfare Trust and all RAG-affiliated charities. Last year, “SinnedD” raised £6,700 for charity.
Well, Goodfest will be better. You may have Basshunter, but we have Taming the Savage…
The theme is pretty cool, but to be honest the acts are pretty poor – definitely not enough variation in the genre and with the woeful Lethal Bizzle, I’m contemplating giving it a miss. Shame really, York can’t seem to get a decent music act these days…
@Pint of Guiness Please, Sir
Grime, Dubstep, DnB, Indie, Electro, Swing, Cheese and Dance. Seems pretty varied to me.
And I wouldn’t exactly describe Lethal Bizzle as woeful. If you’d ever seen him live you’d know that. He’s one of the best live acts I’ve seen.
Pint of Guinness, are you dizzy blad? The acts are so varied, from DJ’s to bands, from Grime to Indie, from Dubstep to Cheese. Infact, you should probably not buy a ticket, go to a shit old mans pub in town, drink a pint of Guinness, and talk to your mates about internships your considering applying to next summer. Some people in York can’t wait for Big D as they know its the best night on campus, and I’m not even in Derwent.
No, I disagree with you both. Basshunter and DJ whatever he is are a bit too similar for me. I have listened to Lethal Bizzle and in my view his music is dire. Itchy Feet seems awesome, but they’d be the only thing I’d want to see.
@Stella. I think I might.
Anyway, I’m seeing Pendulum in June, I’ll spend my £25 on booze there I think.
@Pretty Great
Judging by the fact that it isn’t a YUSU event I’d say that’s not too likely..
Guinness, as you are a fan of Pendulum, I am surprised by your comments. 1. Basshunter and Sub Focus are so radically different I can’t even put into words how bad that comment is; although I suppose it is opinion in the end. 2. Booze at a Pendulum gig? Bad show, all you need there is water to rehydrate you, and unless you’re standing at the back(Which means that there are other people who deserve that ticket more than you), you won’t be able to hold any booze for long.
Big D looks dench bluds. im gassed to be playin’ this far norf. mans been slewin for da big scottish shows since day; now man has one, so im ballin’ like i’m bo’ diddley. yo best gally better be in da livin’ room if not i’m rollin’ out via york racecourse. man loves horses. man won bare P on da horses. here check the vid where man won bare P on da horse. I imagine it’s probably before most readers’ memories, but as recently as 2005 students could pay similar amounts to go to BigD and see the likes of me (a URY jock) warm up for Radio One’s DJ Spooney (who played the last hour of the night, probably having played 3 other university gigs on the way up the M1 the same night). He was the only ‘big name’ on the night, and the average ‘big’ campus event would do lucky to raise the £3k necessary to book anyone you’ve ever heard of.
As a veteran campus and Toffs DJ, I remember sharing dressing rooms with no-one more credible than Bradley from S Club 7 (Rachel Stevens being too expensive), Pat Sharpe from Fun House and Timmy Mallet. Services Officer / ents teams of the last few years seem to be doing extremely well to get anyone currently in the charts or playing large gigs/festivals onto campus. Booking big acts and then breaking even in small venues such as Derwent (capacity 550 as of 2005) with students seemingly reluctant to part with more than a few quid is difficult.
York students today don’t know they’re born.*
*Last comment purely for comedy effect, as it makes me seem really old at the dizzying age of 27… :)
@Pint of Water. My opinion is warped yes. But I like Pendulum because I like the way they incorporate elements of rock, my music of choice, into their music.
And yes, I won’t actually be drinking at the gig, as I will be right in the middle of what promises to be a rather large mosh pit. I shall spend my £25 on a Newcastle night out thank you very much.
bluuuuuds,
why is there too much hype about no real big names. dontcha know man is da biggest name on road. i’m like da M1 of da music world. that’s a road similie: DEEEENCH. anyway, peace. man is just going out of my yard to clean my audi. man got an audi r8. why? cus man is a big name and big names earn serious P.
forever yours,

Make your mind up. You don’t seem to have any idea about anything.
