The men’s badminton 1sts romped to a 7-2 victory over Lancaster’s 1sts.
James Hor and the Baillie Watterson helped York take an early lead in the Badminton, beating much larger, stronger opponents. In two of the matches, it came down to a competition of endurance, as they went to the third end. Watterson and Hor emerged victorious both times.
James Davies and Tim Green weren’t having as good a time of it; losing both of their first two matches. They were desperate to win at least one before the game had finished.
The win was sealed with a win from the unstoppable Ricky Kananbar and Patrick Clarke, who didn’t drop a set in the whole match, winning 21-19, 21-15 against Lancaster’s first doubles, 21-16, 21-17 against their second doubles and 21-12, 21-16 against the third doubles.
Davies and Green were still seeking a win and only had one chance left to get it – against Lancasters thirds. They lost the first set before winning the second, and playing out a grueling third end which eventually finished 22-20.
York had already won the game, so the result of Davies/Green’s last game only improved the margin. A good win for York men, and they’ll be relieved to regain the points lost that morning in the mixed badminton.
