Sam Asfahani can hardly be accused of lacking ambition.
In an exclusive interview with Vision the York Sport President gave a sneak preview of his plans for the upcoming year which include ideas for an unprecedented college sport tournament with Durham and a new bonus-filled membership card for York Sport members.
Asfahani disclosed that talks are ongoing between the University and Durham for a “Collegium” tournament contested by the two universities, in which students from colleges across both universities would compete against one another in a range of sports.
He said: “Durham are very excited. I’d love for it to happen this year, and I’m hoping we can do it in February before the Varsity tournament (against York St Johns) comes around. It’s definitely time college sport had a proper platform.”
Asfahani also revealed that, as part of an effort to “give back” to York Sport members, he’s looking to introduce a discount membership card that would grant holders a range of special offers across the city.
Two-for-one deals on main courses, cocktails and other drinks would be available for owners of the card at places such as Lowthers, Gibson’s, Vodka Rev’s on student nights, and other restaurants and clubs.
Furthermore, the York Sport President still has big ideas for this summer’s Roses tournament.
Asfahani confirmed that talks are progressing well between the University and local rugby league team York City Knights, with a view to using the rugby league team’s stadium as a showcase venue for the Friday night rugby 1sts match.
A preliminary date of May 13-15th has been set for this summer’s Roses weekend, to be confirmed next month.
