With a leaden colour scheme on a not quite burnt porridge coloured background, you could be forgiven for walking straight past the latest book from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Americanah. The visual imagery usually adorned on Adichie’s books has been summarised down to simply the title, the author’s name, her previous book and a few extra words. This front cover gives nothing away of plot, character or setting. Or doesn’t it? The bright colours – red and blue – are instantly recognisable as being of the colours of the American flag, which indicates America as a possible setting. And with Adichie’s literary background of writing about Nigeria and its people, this book might be advertising itself only towards readers of her previous books, those that would be grabbed by her name alone. Americanah‘s front cover is a daring but shrewd decision as a departure from Adichie’s usual book designs.
