Northern universities have won 6 places in the top 11 universities for student nightlife however York is not among them.
The survey, conducted by consumer group Which?, asked 11,000 students from over 100 UK universities to rate their nightlife experience.
Northumbria and Newcastle University topped the list with Liverpool, Leeds and Nottingham Trent close behind.
York did not make the list despite it being dominated by northern universities.
The University also falied to achieve top ratings for creativity, opportunities for political engagement, sports or student union popularity.
The Which? Director of Campaigns and Policy said: “There are many factors to consider when deciding where to go to university, so hearing how current students rate their university, on everything from nightlife to the political scene, can be really useful."
York nightlife is dominated by YUSU sponsored clubnights at designated venues which take place every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.
Popular late night venue The Willow, an independent Chinese restaurant with a dance floor, closed in July last year.
