Why Oh Wiley?

Wiley - A no show at the Freshers Ball

Freshers were left disappointed on on Monday night after yet another performer pulled out of a YUSU event at short notice.

Wiley, the singer whose hits include the popular song ‘Wearing my Rolex’, pulled out of the Freshers’ Ball at short notice. This follows a spate of disappointing incidents including the withdrawal at the last minute of popular indie band Noah and the Whale from last year’s Freshers’ Ball and another more recent incident which saw The Noisettes pull out of Summer Ball claiming that YUSU had not agreed a contract with them.

Many students are now questioning the event’s £30 ticket prices. One Goodricke first-year told Vision: “The event was a bit of a let down really, the drinks were so expensive and then the headline act pulled out. We had more fun when we got back to our kitchens afterwards.”

Hopes are high that YUSU will have better luck with the Access All Areas event on Saturday at which Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens and notoriously cheesy pop act, The Cheeky Girls are still set to perform.

  1. i was so disapointed, in total me and my flatmate waiting for 2-3 hours to get there between having to wait for the number 6 to main campus and the abismally organised coaches. then by half ten things like the choccy fountain began closing and by 11 all circus features – bar the fire people – were done. and the fire people..if id wanted to see people who cant juggle drop things id watch myself in a mirror for free!

  2. Heh. This is one of the main reasons I don’t go to YUSU events. Ignoring the fact that the acts billed at the events don’t appeal to me at all, I find it much more satisfying to take myself to Fibbers for a gig for ~£6, or even get on a train to Leeds and see someone I want to see for £20-£25 total. Still cheaper than YUSU events, I can choose the acts I want to see, AND they actually play. It’s great!

  3. Freshers ball is often disappointing, but this is only because the price is so expensive it is always going to be underwhelming. I’m sure most students would sacrifice a few fire eaters and a chocolate fountain for a for a cheaper ticket.

It’s shocking that Wiley is yet another act to pull out of a YUSU event. However, surely Yusu can’t be blamed for a musicians unreliability…

  4. All the off stage entertainment, i.e. fire juggling, digital funfair, urban circus, candyfloss, chocolate fountain, arts stage etc all closed at 1am – juggle soc slightly earlier as they ran out of fuel.
