Halifax inflicted the biggest win of this term’s season on Sunday afternoon with an almighty score of 15-0 over Postgraduate college Wentworth.
Braces for the college cup champions’ two strikers George Waring and captain Garo Heath provided ‘Fax with a resounding statement to the rest of the teams in the league. With an indifferent campaign so far, this win will certainly brighten their prospects for the rest of the year.
Halifax were dominant from the word go and a string of goals in the first twenty minutes set the tone for the masterclass that would take place. Waring opened the scroing with a simple tap in after Wentworth keeper Smith was caught in no man’s land after a high ball through from Bowden. A professional penalty from Connor McCoy and another striker’s finish from Waring put Halifax out of sight in no time. Garo Heath helped to heap more woe on Wentworth, getting on the score sheet after great skill by McCoy put him in a perfect position to roll the ball home, before setting up Waring to complete his Hatrick. The floodgates were well and truly open now with Lukes Girzadas firing home the rebound from Ollie Bull’s shot to put his team 6 to the good.
The constantly dependable partnership in the middle of the field of Connor McCoy and Guy Bowden dictated play and proved too skillful for their opponents and this was publicised with a free kick on the stroke of half time, with Bowden running over the ball to deceive the defence before McCoy drilled the ball into the left hand corner for his team’s seventh.
It was now damage limitation for Wentworth, but ‘Fax showed hunger and were determined not to give their opponents a moment’s peace.
Freshers Lukas Girzadas and Omar Chadli impressed throughout, proving dangerous down the flanks and giving great supply to Heath and Waring. Girzadas beat the offside trap to gift Waring his fourth, while Heath capitalised on some careless passing in the post-grades own third to make it 9-0.
Waring got his fifth shortly before being substituted, while Heath began to catch up with a thundering volley, before a great run allowed him time to eye up the perfect opening and firing low into the left hand left corner. The striker and his team were scoring for fun and showed no sign of stopping. ‘Fax continued to press high, harassing their opponents and forbidding them from crossing the half way line. A rebound from a McCoy shot gave substitute Ewan Gillespie an open invitation to get on the score sheet, while Goldthorpe also hammered home from the edge of the box before Heath rounded off proceedings, ready to greet a long ball into the box by scoring his sixth and Halifax’s fifteenth.
Speaking to Vision after the match, Heath was already looking forward and keen to stress what this win will do for his team’s confidence: “In games like that you’ve always got a tendency to drop off but we didn’t do that, we played well all the way through, couple of selfish aspects creeping in at the end, we should be very confident in front of goal next week when it really matters”.
For Wentworth the difficulty this season has often been in having a consistent team, though their win against Goodrike may still see them avoid relegation but captain Erasmus du Toit told Vision their main aim is rebuilding: ‘the team’s gone through changes since last year so we’re still building a new team, finding new players, this part of the season is just rebuilding, finding a team, finding everyone’s positions and so forth.
