Those who joined in on the prank over the Courtyard bar closure are to be rewarded, YUSU President Sam Maguire has said.
In a statement, he said YUSU were inviting students to bring a long a friend for a “drink or two” to have a look at the changes to the campus bar in Derwent College.
“The University recognises, as much as everyone else, the need for quality social space on campus and that is why we have spent the summer giving the Courtyard a bit of a facelift after 5 long but successful years,” he said.
“To thank you for being such good sports we are inviting anyone who posted a comment on the yusu bars status (before 2pm today) to bring a friend along to the Courtyard as our special guests on Wednesday week 0 from 9pm. We would love to give you the opportunity of a sneak preview of the changes we have made and to buy you a drink or two on us.”
A Facebook post by YUSU Bars last night sparked a storm on social media after they announced that the Courtyard was closing for good so it could merged into Hendrix Hall, located next door.
But it was later confirmed by Sam Maguire that this was in fact a joke, leading some to claim the union were just trying to whip up publicity.
One said: “What utter nonsense. Bring it back immediately.”
Another wrote: “It was literally the only one I liked.”
The Courtyard holds particular prominence with students and societies and has hosted events from the World Cup to the 2012 US Presidential Election.
It opened in 2009 and is the flagship bar and restaurant for the students’ union.
Second-year social policy student Ananna Zaman said she thought the joke was “mean”. “The courtyard should not be joked about,” she said.

Has Kallum got a job yet..? Bring him back!
lol epic bantz, YUSU.
YUSU announced they were refurbishing Courtyard in June, and the University would have neither the desire nor the need to reclaim what is YUSU’s most profitable venture. It’s a wind-up to build attention for the announcement of the refurbishment. Good lord, and you people call yourselves journalists.
What?! I’m not a big drinker but courtyard is ALWAYS busy. Shutting it for the sake of a teaching room? Ridiculous. Build another one on hes east. Courtyard is one of the busiest bars on campus, furthermore, yusu need the money. Students should have been consulted about this. Are the university really that out of touch?!
He now straightens the displays in TKMaxx.
I am Groot.
The amount of people believing this is absolutely shocking. You all go to a Russell Group Uni, hang your heads in shame.
@not impressed, read the headline but not the article did we?
Student media. You can’t beat it.
@Dave
The content of this article keeps being edited. When ‘not impressed’ originally commented, the article was reporting the “closure” as fact.
The article on this page keeps changing. It says something different now from what it said when that comment was written.
“The Courtyard holds particular prominence with students and societies and has hosted events from the World Cup to the 2012 US Presidential Election.”
A logical but humorous ambiguity in this wording made me imagine Obama giving viciously charismatic speeches on the Courtyard podium, or the German world cup side accidentally knocking a glass of beer on a student
Jeez. Firstly Vision, you put up a story without doing some simple research to ensure its accuracy (something that I would imagine is bread and butter for professional journalists) and then you put up a vote to see if readers found it funny or not. It’s almost as if you are now trying to get yourself out of a corner.
Have a sense of humour or write a decent article. Ideally do both.
