Nintendo have officially announced the termination of Wi-Fi functionality for the Wii and DS games consoles, following the shutdown of GameSpy.
Gamespy Technology, a subsidiary of Glu Mobile, will see its servers close at the end of the month, cutting services globally to the two consoles.
There is a silver lining, however, as the Wii and DS’ virtual shops will still remain accessible to consumers.
Nintendo provided a press release on their website:
“We at Nintendo sincerely thank our fans for their continued support of our company’s legacy systems. Your enthusiasm for games made for these systems speaks to their longevity and the passion of Nintendo fans.”
Whilst the WiiU and 3DS won’t be affected, GameSpy also powered the services for many titles, including the Arma and Crysis series.
