Students at the University were left stranded today – after trains were cancelled and roads were closed.

Gusts of up to 80mph forecast by the Met Office wreaked havoc on the road and rail networks as trees were blown down and timetabled services were axed.

One student, speaking via Twitter, worried about missing her deadline after East Coast train line scrapped its normal service.

“Speed restrictions have been imposed and therefore East Coast are running an amended timetable today,” the company’s Live Travel Information said.

Operator First Bus also experienced major delays due to the gales and an increased volume of traffic on the roads.

A City of York Council spokesperson said via Twitter: “More traffic on the roads today as people decide not to use their cycles due to the very high winds.”

Minor incidences on-campus have been reported to Vision, including a fallen hedge and a number of bikes being wedged off metal poles.

But it is unknown how many students have sought assistance from reception desks after Academic Registrar David Duncan called on them to if they had concerns.

He said: “We will have a full complement of porters and security officers on campus, and anyone who is concerned or who needs assistance should call security or ask at the nearest reception desk.”

Meanwhile, the planned Christmas Fayre in Parliament Street was also called off today due to the high winds.

And a trampoline left drivers baffled on the B1224 at Long Marston after it had broken free from its garden.

Nationally, thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes, and a man in Nottingham has been killed by a falling tree.
